Gerard KUIJPERS Belgium, b. 1961

The dialogue between opposites expressed in Kuijpers' sculptural furniture threads through his work for the past 30 years. The face-off between strength and fragility, weight and gravity-defying marble is poetically resolved in his combination and contrast of material and form.

Kuijpers' work is distinctly his own - his integration of polished hard edge and organic rough hewn surfaces is, at once, both satisfying and stimulating. This dynamism and harmonious tension characterises Kuijpers' furniture and sculpture, such as his famous 'Dancing Stones'. A cantilevered marble console, for example, presents a monumental floating splinter of white marble, secured almost invisibly to its metal support. Kuijpers himself acknowledges these opposing forces "…resistance versus movement, severity versus organic, and usability versus poetry…"
